Automated Prepress Workflow for Harlequin® RIPs
Demands for prepress and RIP automation are on the rise. Deadlines are compressing as shops transition to an all-digital workflow. Much of the labor-intensive manual work of the past has been eliminated, but so has the cushion of time built into a job. Xitronʼs XiFlow, an automated workflow solution for Navigator and other Harlequin RIPs, helps you meet these demands while bringing control to your prepress department. Add XiFlow to your current Harlequin RIP or integrate it with a new system. XiFlow is a modular workflow solution that grows as your needs change and provides the tools you need to manage your prepress workflow.
RIP Manager
The foundation of XiFlow is a RIP Manager. A graphical user interface allows prepress operators to manage jobs on the RIP from Windows® and Macintosh® clients, without leaving their workstations. Operators setup workflow queues to define the various steps needed to complete a job from preflighting to final output.
Workflows
Workflows are used to define the steps a job takes through prepress. An example of a simple workflow is first to create a proof and then place the job on hold waiting for client approval. When the job is approved it is released for final output. Additional workflow steps may also be included such as PDF Stabilization or Preflight.
Job Status and Job Management
The XiFlow Client provides the operator with a complete view of all jobs in the system. Job lists are viewable by workflow step or status such as those “on hold.” From the XiFlow Client, the operator may also resend, redirect or cancel jobs. These tools in the XiFlow Client enhance productivity by eliminating the need for an operator to walk to the RIP.
Jobs can be sent through various steps at different times without returning to the original application to print another proof or re-image a section. XiFlow retains the original PostScript® file or PDF for ultimate flexibility.
The job management tools help eliminate common errors that occur when different operators work on the same job. For example, it helps operators find what version of the job was approved by the client.
Viewer
An integrated viewer in the XiFlow client allows an operator to preview the RIPped file without leaving their workstation. The viewer offers multiple zoom settings, and allows operators to view traps and screening prior to final output.
PDF Stabilizer Option
The PDF Stabilizer option converts incoming PostScript and PDF files to a PDF format that is optimized for prepress workflow and output.
Preflight Option
The Preflight option allows users to automatically preflight jobs using state-of-the-art libraries licensed from Enfocus. Users can view a report outlining the errors and warnings with hyperlinks that open the PDF file to the page where the problem occurs. Many problems can be fixed in Acrobat using the Enfocus® PitStop Professional™ tools, eliminating the need to open the file again in the native application. Furthermore, Enfocus Actions Lists™ can be used to fix the most common problems automatically such as converting RGB to CMYK.
Automate the use of PDF files one step further by using the Certified PDF™ Checker included in the Preflight option. Supply Enfocus Certified PDF profiles to your customers with the proper settings to output jobs for your shop. Your customer uses the profile when creating PDFs for production. XiFlow checks the incoming file to see if the job was created with the correct profile and alerts you if it was not.
ViewerPlus Option
The ViewerPlus option adds functionality to the Viewer including: an ink density calculator, the ability to measure distances between two points in the job and additional tools for panning and scrolling in the preview window.
XiFlow System
A complete XiFlow Workflow Solution is comprised of at least three elements:
• Navigator or other Harlequin 6.0* Windows-based RIP
• XiFlow Server - controls the status of jobs in the system and communicates with the RIP(s). The server is installed on same platform as the RIP or on a standalone Windows PC.
• XiFlow Client - used by operators to manage jobs and create or edit workflows. The client runs on prepress operatorʼs Macintosh or Windows workstation.
Modular Approach
XiFlow offers Navigator and other Harlequin-based RIP users a modular approach to workflow. Design your own workflow solution by purchasing the features and capabilities that meet your business needs. As your needs expand, add optional modules and support without having to invest in an entirely new system. Adding the PDF and Preflight options turns the basic XiFlow RIP Manager into a PDF Workflow system.
